Frequently asked questions

What is a bariatric chair?

A bariatric chair is a specialist seating solution specifically engineered to safely support individuals with higher weight requirements. Unlike standard chairs, bariatric chairs are built with reinforced frames, wider seat dimensions and specialist cushioning to provide comfort, safety and postural support for users who need greater capacity and more robust construction.

What weight capacity do your bariatric chairs support?

Our bariatric chairs range from 25 stone capacity at entry level up to 70 stone (approximately 444 kg) at the upper end of our range, depending on the model. During your free home assessment, our specialist will help you identify the right chair for your specific weight capacity requirements.

Are bariatric chairs suitable for home use?

Absolutely. Our bariatric chairs for home use are designed to blend seamlessly into your living space while providing the specialist support you need. We understand that comfort, dignity and aesthetics all matter — our chairs look at home in any room, without drawing unnecessary attention to your needs.

How do I know if I need a bariatric chair?

If you require additional support, a wider seating area, or a higher weight capacity than standard chairs provide, a bariatric chair is likely to be the right choice. You may also benefit from a bariatric chair if you’re managing conditions associated with obesity, such as lymphoedema, oedema, COPD, cardiovascular issues or skin fragility. Our specialists can carry out a thorough assessment during a free home visit.

What motor options are available for bariatric riser recliner chairs?

We offer both dual and triple motor systems for our bariatric riser recliners. A dual motor system provides independent control of the backrest and footrest. A triple motor system adds independent lumbar support control, giving maximum positioning flexibility. Our specialist will advise which option is most appropriate for your individual needs.

Can a bariatric chair help with pressure sores?

Yes. People with higher weight requirements are at elevated risk of pressure injuries due to greater loading on skin and tissue. Our bariatric chairs incorporate specialist pressure-relieving cushioning, ergonomic seat shaping and, where appropriate, Tilt-in-Space functionality to redistribute pressure and significantly reduce the risk of pressure sores developing.

Are bariatric chairs available for care homes and clinical settings?

Yes. Our bariatric range is suitable for a wide range of settings including private homes, nursing and residential care homes, hospitals and hospices. We work closely with Occupational Therapists and care teams to ensure the right chair is specified for each user and setting.

Can bariatric chairs be funded through the NHS?

Some bariatric chairs may qualify for funding through NHS continuing healthcare, local authority provision or other funding pathways, depending on the individual’s assessed needs. Our team can provide guidance and support with funding applications where appropriate, and we regularly work alongside Occupational Therapists who may be coordinating this process.

How long does delivery take for a bariatric chair?

Standard bariatric models are typically delivered within 5–6 weeks of order. Fully bespoke bariatric chairs, built to your exact measurements and specification, may take a little longer due to their specialised construction. Your consultant will give you a clear, confirmed timescale at the point of order.

Are Channel Healthcare bariatric chairs made in Britain?

Yes. Every Channel Healthcare chair, including our bariatric range, is hand-built in the UK using market-leading British engineered steel components. From the reinforced frame to the upholstery and every specialist feature, our chairs are crafted by skilled British craftspeople to the highest standards of quality and durability.
