Frequently asked questions

What is a healthcare chair?

A healthcare chair is a specialist seating solution designed specifically for use in clinical and care environments including nursing and residential homes, hospitals, hospices and home care settings. They incorporate features that go beyond standard comfort seating, including clinical pressure care systems, infection-control fabrics, carer-friendly transfer mechanisms and adjustable postural support. For OTs, they are a clinical specification tool. For care home managers, they are an essential piece of care equipment. For families, they represent dignity and wellbeing for a loved one in care.

What is the difference between a healthcare chair and a specialist chair?

The terms are closely related; all healthcare chairs are specialist chairs, but not all specialist chairs are specifically designed for institutional care environments. Our healthcare chair range focuses on chairs with features that are particularly suited to nursing homes, hospitals and hospices: easy-clean fabrics, infection-resistant materials, carer-assist mechanisms and clinical pressure care configurations. They are also fully suitable for home environments where similar clinical needs exist.

Can an OT specify a healthcare chair for a patient or resident?

Yes and many do. Our healthcare chairs are frequently specified by Occupational Therapists following formal seating assessments, either for individual home-based clients or for residents in nursing and residential care. Our consultants are experienced in working to OT prescriptions, and OTs are welcome at every stage of the assessment and fitting process. We can also liaise directly with OTs unable to attend in person.

Are healthcare chairs suitable for nursing and residential homes?

Yes. Our healthcare chairs are specifically designed with the demands of nursing and residential care in mind. That means robust construction for intensive daily use, easy-clean fabric options, removable components for hygiene and motor and positioning configurations that reduce the physical burden on care staff. We can also support bulk or phased ordering for care homes specifying across multiple residents.

What pressure care options are available?

Medium pressure care is standard across our healthcare range. For higher-risk users i.e. those with existing pressure injuries, fragile skin or conditions that significantly increase pressure sore risk, we offer upgrades to high-risk air and gel solutions. OTs can specify the exact pressure care configuration required as part of their clinical prescription, and our consultants can advise on the most appropriate option for each individual.

What is Tilt-in-Space and why is it important in care settings?

Tilt-in-Space allows the seat and backrest to tilt as one unit, redistributing pressure across the body and reducing shear forces on the skin. In care settings, this is clinically significant for residents who spend extended periods seated, those at high risk of pressure injuries, and those with complex postural needs. It also reduces the frequency of manual repositioning by care staff, lowering both carer burden and the risk of handling injuries.

What is Trendelenburg positioning and when is it used?

Trendelenburg positioning refers to reclining the chair to a fully lay-flat or head-lower-than-feet position. It is used in clinical settings to support specific medical needs, to aid circulation, and for users who require extended periods of recumbent rest during the day. The Havant Healthcare chair is specifically designed around a dual motor Trendelenburg mechanism to provide this capability.

Can healthcare chairs be used at home as well as in care settings?

Yes. All three chairs in our healthcare range are equally suitable for home use,  particularly for individuals whose care needs are managed at home but who require the same level of clinical support as those in institutional settings. Families sourcing a chair for a loved one being cared for at home will find the same clinical features, Made in Britain quality and personalised fitting service available to them.

How do I arrange a bulk order for a care home?

Contact our team directly to discuss your setting and requirements. We can arrange a site visit, carry out individual assessments for multiple residents, and provide a phased delivery and fitting plan to suit your care home’s operational needs. Every chair is still built and specified individually, regardless of order size.
