Frequently asked questions
A specialist chair goes beyond standard comfort seating. It incorporates specific features, materials and mechanisms such as Tilt-in-Space, pressure care systems, adjustable postural supports and enhanced weight capacity that are designed to support particular health conditions, mobility challenges or complex postural requirements. Every element is engineered to provide targeted support where it matters most.
Our specialist chairs can provide targeted support for a wide range of conditions, including MND, MS, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, contractures, spina bifida, severe arthritis, fibromyalgia and neuropathy. We work collaboratively with Occupational Therapists, families and individuals to find the right solution for every user, no matter how complex their needs.
Our free home assessment process is designed to identify the most beneficial features for your individual situation, often in consultation with your Occupational Therapist or other healthcare professional. Our specialist seating consultants are experienced in working with complex needs and will guide you through every option.
Tilt-in-Space is a mechanism that allows the entire seat and backrest to tilt as one unit, without changing the angle between the two. This redistributes pressure across the body, reduces shear forces on the skin and helps maintain a safe, supported posture — making it especially valuable for users at risk of pressure injuries or those with complex postural needs.
Yes. Many chairs in our specialist range are designed specifically for nursing and residential homes, hospitals, hospices and specialist treatment facilities, as well as for home use. We can advise on the most appropriate model for your setting and will work with your care team to ensure the right chair is specified.
Some specialist chairs may qualify for funding through NHS continuing healthcare, local authority provision or other funding schemes. Our team can provide guidance and support with applications where appropriate, and we work closely with Occupational Therapists who may be involved in the funding process.
A comprehensive assessment typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, giving us the time we need to fully understand your needs, medical history and goals, as well as demonstrate the most suitable options. We never rush this process.
Standard models are typically delivered within 5–6 weeks. Bespoke chairs built to your exact specification may take a little longer. Your consultant will give you a clear timescale when you order.
A riser recliner helps users move from sitting to standing more easily and provides comfort and support for everyday use. A specialist chair incorporates additional clinical features — such as advanced pressure care, higher levels of postural adjustment and carer-assist mechanisms — for users with more complex or progressive health conditions. Many specialist chairs also have a riser function, combining both capabilities.
Yes. We offer free, no-obligation home visits across the UK. Every one of our seating specialists is DBS checked and adheres to our strict Channel Code of Conduct, so you and your family can have complete peace of mind about the quality and integrity of the service you receive.
